The Joy of the New

Mark 2:18-22

Jesus said to them, “The wedding attendants cannot fast while the bridegroom is with them, can they? As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast.

Jesus said to them, “Can the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them?” With these words, Jesus reveals that his presence begins a time of joy and renewal.

Fasting, a legitimate and valuable practice, can’t be performed as an empty ritual when the heart is called to celebrate the coming of the Kingdom. Jesus is the bridegroom, and His presence transforms sadness into joy. The gospel is simply not a patch on the old, nor new wine in old wineskins; it’s a completely new reality that requires renewed hearts. This passage invites us to examine whether we’re trying to live our faith as an addition to our old customs, or whether we have truly allowed Christ to make us new. The gospel doesn’t accommodate our old structures; it calls us to be transformed, to receive the newness of the Spirit, and to live in freedom and joy.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, renew our hearts and fill us with the joy of your presence. Amen.

El Gozo de lo Nuevo

Marcos 2:18-22

Jesús les dijo: ¿Acaso pueden los que están de bodas ayunar mientras está con ellos el esposo? Entre tanto que tienen consigo al esposo, no pueden ayunar.

Marcos 2:19

Jesús les dijo: ¿Acaso pueden los que están de bodas: “¿Acaso pueden ayunar los invitados mientras el novio está con ellos?”. Con estas palabras, Jesús revela que su presencia inaugura un tiempo de gozo y renovación.

El ayuno, práctica legítima y valiosa, no puede imponerse como un rito vacío cuando el corazón está llamado a celebrar la llegada del Reino. Jesús es el novio, y su presencia transforma la tristeza en alegría. El evangelio no es un parche sobre lo viejo, ni vino nuevo en odres viejos; es una realidad completamente nueva que requiere corazones renovados. Este pasaje nos invita a examinar si estamos intentando vivir la fe como un añadido a nuestras viejas costumbres, o si realmente hemos permitido que Cristo nos haga nuevos. El evangelio no se acomoda a nuestras viejas estructuras; nos llama a ser transformados, a recibir la novedad del Espíritu y a vivir en libertad y gozo.

Oración: Señor Jesús, renueva nuestro corazón y llénanos con el gozo de tu presencia. Amén.
