THE FASTING THAT IS PLEASING TO GOD

Matthew 9:14-17

“Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples do not fast?”

For Jesus, fasting has a very profound meaning, which he explains to us through three images: the bridegroom, the new cloth, and the new wine in old wineskins.

In the first image, he appears as the bridegroom and the disciples as his guests.

From the second image, he shows what follows when we must blindly follow ancient traditions: it is like mending old clothes with new cloth.

According to the last image the new wine requires new wine skins to be preserved. So is what happens to us after our encounter with Jesus: a new behavior is required of us.

Jesus teaches us to fast from sadness and resentment, from those traditions that prevent us from living a new life with Him, from lifestyles that limit our growth. He exhorts us to fast from all this in order to live each day, according to his purpose, as if each day were a wedding, celebrating life, in freedom and on the path of goodness and fulfillment.

Prayer: May our fasting be pleasing to you, Lord, and may be able to share mercy and love. Amen.

El AYUNO QUE AGRADA A DIOS

Mateo 9:14-17

“... Nosotros y los fariseos ayunamos mucho, ¿por qué tus discípulos no ayunan?”

Para Jesús el ayuno tiene un significado bien profundo, nos los explica mediante tres imágenes: el novio, la tela nueva y el vino nuevo en odres viejos.

En la primera imagen se presenta a sí mismo con el novio y a los discípulos como sus invitados.

A partir de la segunda imagen, muestra lo que sucede cuando se nos obliga a seguir determinadas tradiciones antiguas, es como remendar con tela nueva un vestido viejo.

Según la última imagen el vino nuevo para que pueda conservarse, necesita odres nuevos. Así nos sucede después del encuentro con Jesús, se hace necesario un comportamiento nuevo.

Jesús nos enseña a ayunar de las tristezas y rencores, de aquellas tradiciones que nos impiden vivir la nueva vida junto a Él, de los modos de vida que limitan nuestro crecimiento. Nos exhorta a ayunar de todo esto para vivir cada día, de acuerdo a su propuesta, como si cada día fuese una boda, celebrando la vida, en libertad y en el camino de lo bueno y la plenitud.

Oración: Que nuestro ayuno sea el que agrada a ti Señor, y que podamos compartir, misericordia y amor. Amén.
