In Search of the Lost Sheep

Matthew 18:12-14

And if he finds it, truly I tell you, he rejoices over it more than over the ninety-nine that never went astray.

In our popular tradition, it is very common to call someone who dares to separate from his/her family and embark on a new path a “black sheep.” In many cases, this new path is not very straight or favorable, so the family becomes distressed and tries to rescue that person at all costs.

In this parable of the lost sheep, the shepherd who represents God does the same: He has one hundred sheep and one lost; However, his reaction is not resignation; on the contrary, the loss of that one person is deeply felt, because to God we are not numbers but loved and unique individuals. No matter how far a person has strayed, they remain valuable to Him and worthy of being sought out and rescued.

Jesus is inviting us to be shepherds in our own environments, searching for those who have distanced themselves from the community, offering them our help, listening to them and understanding their needs. He challenges us to be more inclusive, compassionate, and active in our faith.

Prayer: Merciful God who knows the interior of our hearts, don’t allow sin to separate us from you. Forgive me for all the times I have strayed, and I thank you for all the times you have rescued me and brought me back to you again. Amen.

En busca de la oveja perdida.

Mateo 18, 12-14

"Y si acontece que la encuentra, de cierto os digo que se regocija más por aquella, que por las noventa y nueve que no se descarrearon"

En nuestra tradición popular, es muy común llamar -oveja negra- a aquel que se atreve a separarse de la familia y emprender un nuevo camino, que en muchas ocasiones se trata de una senda no muy recta ni favorable, entonces la familia se angustia y trata de rescatar a esa persona a toda costa.

En esta parábola de la oveja perdida, el pastor que representa a Dios, hace lo mismo: Él tiene cien ovejas y pierde una, pero su reacción no es de resignación, al contrario, la pérdida de esa única es sentida profundamente, ya que para Dios no somos números sino individuos amados y únicos. Cada persona sin importar cuán lejos se ha extraviado, sigue siendo para Él valiosa y digna de ser buscada y rescatada.

Jesús nos está invitando a ser pastores en nuestro propio entorno, buscando a aquellos que se han alejado de la comunidad, ofreciéndoles nuestro apoyo, escuchándolos y entendiendo sus necesidades. Nos desafía a ser más inclusivos, compasivos y activos en nuestra fe.

Oración: Dios de misericordia, tú que conoces el interior de nuestros corazones, no permitas que el pecado nos aparte de ti. Perdona todas las veces que me he perdido, y te agradezco por todas aquellas que me has rescatado y llevado hacia ti de nuevo. Amén.
