A DIFFERENT KIND OF COMPLICITY

Luke 11:47-54

Woe to you, teachers of the law! You have taken away the key of knowledge...

Luke 11:52

The scripture is a denunciation of the falsehoods and manipulations of the teachers of the law, who, pretending to be followers of God’s law, were accomplices to wrongdoing. By condoning their predecessors’ failure to acknowledge their responsibility for the death of the prophets and even trying to appear the opposite by building tombs for them, they showed how complicit they were in these injustices.

By omitting the true path to salvation (you have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith., Mathew 23:23) and burdening the people with traditions and rules, which they presented as indispensable requirements for salvation, even though they were impossible to fulfill even for themselves, they revealed their true character.  The salvation that God offers us is as forceful as Jesus’ own words to the teachers of the law: it is not achieved through false appearances or pretense, but rather it is an invitation to live as accomplices of mercy and justice.

Prayer: Lord, help us to live according to the practice of love, of what is just and good for our lives and for those around us. Amen.

UNA COMPLICIDAD DIFERENTE

Lucas 11, 47-54

¡Ay de vosotros, intérpretes de la ley!, porque habéis quitado la llave del conocimiento…

La escritura es una denuncia a las falsedades y manipulaciones de los maestros de la ley, quienes aparentando ser personas seguidoras de la ley de Dios, eran cómplices de lo mal hecho. Siendo condescendientes con sus antecesores al no reconocer su responsabilidad en la muerte de los profetas, más tratando de aparentar lo contrario al construirles sepulcros, mostraban cuan cómplices eran de estas injusticias.

Al omitir el verdadero camino para alcanzar la salvación, (y habéis descuidado los preceptos de más peso de la ley: la justicia, la misericordia y la fidelidad, Mt 23,23) y cargar al pueblo con tradiciones y reglas, las que presentaban como requisitos indispensables para alcanzar la salvación; aun cuando eran de imposible cumplimiento incluso hasta para ellos, revelaban su verdadero carácter.  La salvación que Dios nos ofrece es tan contundente como las propias palabras de Jesús a los maestros de la ley, no se alcanza con falsas apariencias ni simulaciones, más sí es una invitación vivir siendo cómplices de la misericordia y la justicia.

Oración: Maestro ayúdanos a vivir desde la práctica del amor, de lo que es justo y bueno para nuestras vidas y para quienes nos rodean. Amén
